Firefly Aerospace is a privately held aerospace company that develops light launch vehicles to deliver small satellites and cubes into space. Firefly is a New Space company that seeks to expand access to space through the use of innovative technologies. The main objective is to reduce costs for rocket launches thus making space accessible to a wide range of players, like small companies and universities.
The company’s first launch of the first rocket Alpha is scheduled for 2021, at the SLC-2W launch pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
In November 2018, Firefly Aerospace was selected by NASA for its moon exploration program with a total budget of $2.6 billion. In 2019, the U.S. Air Force chose Firefly to participate in its Orbital Services Program-4 (OSP-4).
In December 2020 NASA’s Launch Services Program (LSP) awarded Firefly Aerospace as a main supplier to launch small satellites (SmallSats) to space, including CubeSats, microsats or nanosatellites. Value of the contact to provide these commercial launch capabilities – $9.8 million USD

In February 2021 General Atomics Awards Contract to Firefly Aerospace to Launch NASA’s Multi-Angle Imager for Aerosols Mission
In 2022, the company carried out the first successful launch of its Alpha rocket, with the rocket reaching outer space on October 1. This was the company’s second attempt after a partially-successful launch on September 3, 2021, when the Alpha rocket achieved liftoff from its launch pad and reached supersonic speed.
In 2022, Northrop Grumman selected Firefly Aerospace to build the first stage for the third generation of the Antares rocket, the Antares 330+. The rocket upgrade became necessary for Northrop Grumman due to its inability to continue purchasing the Russian engines used in the second-generation Antares 230+.
